Making New Years Resolutions for Your Dog

It’s that time of year again! You know, the time we make lists and promise ourselves to do things diffe rently this year. For 2014, I encourage you to include some New Years resolutions that include your dog a maybe a little dog training as well.

I enjoy speaking with clients outside of work, like at the grocery store. I love hearing their success stories. Often, the client will say something like, “Thank you for doing a great job! I just wish I were better at keeping it up!” For that, we have created a training journal to help you continue to improve your relationship with your dog. This journal lets you track your training sessions and celebrate your wins! Get your Dog Training Journal by CDT here!

I am starting a training journal with my own dogs on January 1st. You might think my dogs would be very well trained and perfect! I wish… Demi thinks the counter top is an extra food bowl and Annie persists in grabbing arms during greetings.

I have been lenient about their behavior issues for long enough. It’s time to practice what I preach! Here is a list of my New Year’s Resolutions

  1. I will keep a training journal for Annie and Demi.
  2. I will restructure the time I already spend with my dogs to include more training.
  3. I will walk my dogs more and include training on the walks.
  4. I will play more games that teach with my dogs.
  5. I will be more consistent with my house rules.
  6. I will be a better nutritional gatekeeper to help my dogs lose weight.
  7. I will increase their exercise level by taking them to daycare more.
  8. I will involve my grandchildren in training my dogs.

The staff here at CDT already have their dog’s New Year’s Resolutions worked out too! Here is what some of our staff will be working on with their dogs:

Damian:

My New Year’s Resolutions for Angus include:

  1. Teach him where his teeth do and do not belong.
  2. Get my children and dog on a care schedule so they know when and where he needs to be.
  3. Teach him to stand on a rug when he comes in from outside, to clean him up before entering.
  4. Teach him some tricks for being a demo dog for schools and presentations.

(*You may recall that my family had a Havanese named Turbo. He has unfortunately had to find a new home. My last installment in the Day in the Life of Turbo will explain everything.)

Kat:

Zoey is a bundle of love and energy and personality. Sometimes, too much of a bundle. This year, we will be working to address:

  1. Every new sound is not going to kill us. We will work to reduce her anxiety when she hears strange noises.
  2. Beloved belongings will no longer be chewed upon to make a statement. I understand you don’t want to sit at home for an hour right now. You need to understand that I have to go to the grocery store and will be right back. This is a problem that has plagued us for two years now. I can’t afford her shoe habit. So this year, we resolve this once and for all, through love and patience and a crate, if need be.
  3. Sharing. I have seen this dog hoard all the dog bones in the house, refusing to share. While funny to see, this has potential to cause major problems among the dogs.

 

Jessica:

  1. Less barking at mailmen and doorbells. Be diligent on practicing the "Thank you, but I have it" command.
  2. More sleeping on dog beds than couches. Asking the dogs to go to their place when company is over.
  3. Less begging at the dinner table. Asking them to go to place during dinnertime 
  4. More patience with fingers when being fed a treat! Using the "ouch!" to teach bite inhibition.

 

 

What a list! But don’t be discouraged! Some of us have shorter lists focusing on pressing, key issues we want to address this year:

Conor:

My goal for next year is a health related goal, but requires training skills to complete. I need to improve the joint health and vitality of Eeyore and Ruhni.
This includes creating a workout plan for the dogs based on the Veterinarians/ Physical Therapist’s recommendations that involves: repeated sit to stand, not pulling while walking, walking backwards, and walking and stepping over low objects.

 

 

Keith:

Now that my son is 2 and a half, he will soon be having more guests over to the house. So, my family will be working with the dogs on approaching the door politely when the doorbell rings or people come over.

Brian:

My New Year’s resolution for Nessie is to give her better haircuts, and get her 100% off-leash trained.

 

Calvin:

My primary New Year’s resolution is to work on Diva jumping on my guests as they come in our home.
