Thanksgiving is a perfect time to get together with friends and family, or to just sit at home and relax on a
well needed day off. Last week we shared a boat load of information on getting your dog ready for Thanksgiving, so now I wanted to share my Top 5 Thanksgiving Dog Quick Tips!
5. Be sure your pup is up to date on her shots and has current tags.
The last thing you want is a lost, sick dog on your holiday vacation. Also, remember: you may not be at home, so have your cell phone number on their tag so you can still be contacted!
4. No matter what you’re doing – have a backup plan.
Preparation is key when dealing with your dog. Thankfully with cell phones and the internet we don’t have to plan quite as much as we used to, but don’t leave things up to chance with your dog. Know the places to take your dog in an emergency, whether that is medical or simply scheduling issues.
3. Brush up on your dog’s manners before testing them at a holiday gathering.
We are Creative Dog Training, so obviously this is going to be included in the list. We feel strongly that a trained dog is a happy dog. Respect exercises (like ‘Settle Down’), control exercises (like ‘Back Up’ and ‘Let’s Go’), and functional training (like ‘Effective Discipline’ and ‘Handling and Gentle Restraint’) go a long way to making life great for you and your dog.
2. Be cautious letting your dog have human food.
Bones may seem enticing, but ice and carrots are a better way to treat and include your dog. As animal professionals with over 40 years experience, we have seen the worst of all situations. We try our best to stay positive and keep things light, but we have seen so many issues with this type of thing. Just be thoughtful, and bare minimum keep a bowl of treats on the table for people that ‘just have to give the dog something’.
1. Do your research and plan ahead!
Back-up planning again?!? Yup, it’s that important. So know where your dog is going, local emergency services/procedures, alternative dog-friendly hotels, dog parks and places to walk your dog, and current vaccines and tags!
