Last Minute Halloween Tips for Your Dog

Since it is October 30th, I wanted to make a short blog post with a few reminders and last minute tips for Halloween tomorrow night!

For those of you in Birmingham, the costume contest is today and tomorrow. Which means dogs will be arriving in costume at daycare today! I love to see the imagination and humor of our clients in action.

But even if you can’t bring your dog, check out the photos on Facebook and vote for your favorite!

Speaking of costumes, since I was unable to locate a collie costume for Demi I think I am going to dress her up as the princess that she is. She enjoys going trick-or-treating with my grandchildren.

Here is what we will take on our outing (and I’d recommend you do too!):

  • Current dog tags
  • A flashlight to spot dropped candy before she does
  • Reflective tape on her costume
  • Treats for Demi to check stress level
  • Clean up bags
  • Portable water bowl (and a some water to go in it!)

Demi also reminded me to have dog treats available for the four pawed goblins that are sure to come calling.

Demi is 8 years old so she is an old hand at giving out candy. But I still follow these guidelines:

  • She wears her leash and stays with me – she is not above stealing candy
  • I watch for trick-or-treaters to greet them at the door
  • I have Demi back up sit and wait as I open the door
  • I am aware of her body language and stress signs
  • I use my alternate plan - which is to the crate in my bedroom as needed

And what about Annie, my younger more rowdy Golden? She is not ready for Halloween. She becomes over stimulate with multiple visitors. She is spending the night at Camp Creative tonight.

Tonight I am planning to be home to pass out candy, but here is what I would do if I were not home on Halloween night:

  • Tape over the doorbell
  • Leave candy on a table with a note to please take some
  • Secure my dogs in the crates in the bedroom
  • Leave a radio playing classical music

Happy Halloween and remember to vote online for your favorite dog in our costume contest!
